INDIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

 

 Founded by Sir C.V. Raman in 1943, the Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS) aims at promoting the progress and upholding the cause of science. The Academy publishes scientific journals in various disciplines. The other mandates of IAS include recognizing the fostering scientific talent and science education. As part of the science education programme, the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bengaluru along with the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), New Delhi and the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), Allahabad organizes programmes to enhance science education in colleges and universities across the country. The Science Academies' Lecture Workshop Series is one such endeavour.

ST.JOSEPH'S COLLEGE

 

 

 

St. Joseph's College (Autonomous) is managed by the Society of Jesus or Jesuits, a catholic religious order founded in 1540 by St. Ignatius of Loyola. The college was founded in 1882 by the fathers of the French Foreign Mission and bears a 137 year old legacy of creating men and women for the society. The college is registered under the Bangalore Jesuit Educational Society. It is re-accredited with “A” grade and 3.74/4 CGPA by NAAC. The college is recognized as a “College of Excellence” by the UGC. The education imparted by the college enables the students to strive for both academic and human excellence. Academic excellence is pursued by providing a learning environment that constantly challenges the students and supports the ethical pursuit of intellectual curiosity and ceaseless inquiry. Human excellence is promoted through courses and activities that help students achieve personal integrity. The college strives to achieve holistic development by encouraging the students to participate in activity and need based learning.

DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY

 

Established in 2002, the department has grown and contributed to the field of life science education. The department seeks to introduce students to the joys of learning science, to inspire students to enquire, imagine and excel and to equip them to integrate this learning into living. The department seeks to provide students with a wholesome education in Biotechnology, rooted in experiential and evidential learning.

THE WORKSHOP

 
 India is rich in bio-resources and they constitute the untapped capital. Utilizing and conserving these resources shall be an important step for a sustainable development. The workshop aims to create awareness on (i) assessing and documenting the wealth of bioresources, (ii) potential tools and protocols to prospect these resources for human welfare and, (iii) strategies for conserving them in nature. We also aim at creating a plaƞorm where students and faculty can interact with eminent scientists on these themes.
